Would you like to dazzle your ESL students with new, refreshing ideas when teaching dull, required academic vocabulary? In this session you will learn how to take grade-level vocabulary practice sheets and make them meaningful and engaging. Developing norms for scientific sensemaking with resettled refugees
This session involves a presentation about a yearlong after-school program that engaged resettled refugee youth in scientific sensemaking. We make the argument that consistent, longterm scaffolding is needed to engage youth in rich dialogue about science. All session participants will engage in discussion about potential implications.

Resettled Refugees' Strengths and Responsive Instruction
Based on an ethnographic study, this presentation will review how resettled refugees leverage their strengths to make sense of schoolwork. Drawing upon third space theories, the author will share findings and implications for educators. All participants can engage in collaborative discussions to think about implications specific to their work.

Students can think and discuss far above the level at which they can read. Selecting books that are both complex in ideas and language help build metacognitive skills. Participants will use interactive Read-Alouds that support the development of language and literacy by planning intentional teaching opportunities for the read-aloud.
